The spirit of the season is upon us, and what better way to embrace it than with a heartwarming (and slightly chilling) production of Charles Dickens’ classic novella, A Christmas Carol? This December, Open House Theatre brings this timeless story to life at the intimate Theater Spielraum in Vienna.
Watching this classic Dickens´ play has become an annual tradition for me for at least the past two decades. I have seen so many version of it that I practically know it by heart, and yet I never get tired of seeing how it is staged. This was the first year though that I actually got to photograph some rehearsals, which is always a joy to me. The Open House Theatre kindly let me gain insights into their early rehearsal process and later I photographed the dress rehearsal.

A Beloved Tale Reimagined
Open House Theatre’s A Christmas Carol productions are always a fresh take on the familiar narrative. While staying true to the essence of Dickens’ masterpiece, the production boasts a contemporary twist that is sure to resonate with modern audiences.

For those who do not know the story, meet Ebenezer Scrooge, a man whose heart has turned cold from avarice. On the night before Christmas, he’s visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley, his old business partner, who delivers a stern warning about the dire consequences of Scrooge’s greed. What follows is a life-altering journey through time, guided by three spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Each spirit shows Scrooge a different chapter of his life—past, present, and future—pushing him to face the truth about his actions and their effects on the people around him.

The Open House Theatre is a Vienna-based English-language theatre company dedicated to producing high-quality, thought-provoking productions. They are known for their innovative approach to storytelling and their commitment to fostering collaboration between international artists.
Alan Burgon as director has put a creative storytelling frame around the old tale, which lightens it up and makes for many amusing asides. The cast is brilliant as ever, with Dave Moskin as grumpy Scrooge and uncle Eddy, and all other cast members in multiple roles. Lisa Sigismondi truly shines as Steph, Fan, Tiny Tim and drunken party guest, Lisa Gray does a wonderful interpretation of the mother and some ghostly appearances, while Sam Kozeluh is wonderful as loving father and forgiving nephew Fred. Emily Busvine is a very jolly ghost of “Christmas present” and somewhat drunk house guest.

A Christmas Carol is a captivating production that is perfect for the entire family. Whether you are a longtime fan of the story or experiencing it for the first time, Open House Theatre’s production promises to be a memorable and enriching theatrical experience.
So gather your loved ones, and head to Theater Spielraum this December for a dose of holiday cheer and a powerful reminder of the true spirit of Christmas.
